Sometimes the winds get strange and start blowing from the southern directions. Some wavefreaks say that you find the best southwind waves at Faro de Maspalomas (Lighthouse of Maspalomas). That may well be true, since you spot the surfers here almost daily, and they should know their wave spots.

I have sailed here only once, and thanks to the rainy weather the beach was almost empty. Normally there are literally thousands of sunbathers around, and the spot seems to get more and more popular every year.

In fact, it is forbidden to windsurf on the dunes side of the lighthouse. Usually the strong southwest winds bring along the foul weather and the swimmers and surfers stay away. It seems to me that those days the beach guards let anything go.

The access to the beach is somewhat difficult. There are no parking places close to the shoreline, so be prepared to carry your gear few hundred meters. If the beach is crowded, the sailors usually launch from the right side of the lighthouse. There are underlying reefs here and the launch is rocky. Watch out for the swimmers, divers, surfers, boogieboarders and even jetskis! Better still; ask the locals before launching.
