Gran Canaria southeast coast has few places suitable for beginners. Waves, rocky beaches and shorebreak can make life miserable for those eager to learn jibes, waterstarts and use of harness. The beach at the northern end of the bay of Pozo gives less experienced sailors a change to get familiar with Gran Canaria waters. The water is nearly flat, and there is sandy bottom few meters from the shoreline. Beware of the rocks on your left side. The wind blows usually slightly offshore limiting the teaching possibilities for absolute beginners. Wind is also usually much stronger outside than it appears looking from the shore. It is advisable to drive here through Pozo too see what can be expected once you leave the shoreline. The newly built breaker of the Arinaga port gives additional shelter from the waves, so speed blasters find an ideal training spot here. It is also much easier to launch course racing gear here than in Pozo. The bay offers very good training conditions for regatta sailors. The nearest shops and restaurants are in Arinaga town about 2 kms north, so be sure to bring your own water. The water quality outside is pretty bad since there is a large sewer outlet about 500 meters from the shore. They say the water is cleaned, but the smell suggests otherwise. Keep your mouth shut if you fall....
