13. LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL LIFE
We have gathered here some tips about places and activities that you might be
interested in visiting or seeing when you have some free time in Joensuu.
13.1 AURORA INTERNATIONAL MEETING CENTRE
The Aurora International Meeting Centre is a project funded by the European
Social Fund. Its aim is to assist networking, adaptation and cooperation between
foreign visitors, immigrants and the local population. For now, the project
is scheduled to end in May 2001 - its future depending on financing. At the
moment (April 2001) the continuation of Aurora is still unsure. Aurora is designed
to serve as a isliving roomli for both Finns and immigrants, a place where one
can meet people from around the world. There is a cafeteria, plenty of room
to relax, room for meetings/seminars, computers with Internet access, and international
newspapers. Aurora arranges such things as multicultural family evenings, cultural
happenings and Finnish language courses. The International Meeting Centre is
open on weekdays 10:00-19:30
and on Saturdays 14:00-18:00 at Kirkkokatu 27 , PT-Talo, 2nd floor.

13.2 CITY LIBRARY (KAUPUNGINKIRJASTO)

The City Library building has books in several languages, music, videos, magazines,
a café and international news. The library also has material for
studying the Finnish language. Library cards can be obtained from the main desk.
13.3 THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRE OF JOENSUU

13.4 JOENSUUN VAPAAOPISTO (ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE),

The Vapaaopisto offers a wide selection of courses ranging from philosophy to
car repairing; courses are open to everyone, regardless of a person's previous
education. Registration fees vary from FIM 130 to FIM 500. Finnish for Foreigners
courses are also offered. For detailed programmes, please contact the Vapaaopisto
office.
13.5 RELIGIOUS
DENOMINATIONS
Lutheran
The Joensuu Lutheran Student Parish offers various activities. During semesters
the main gatherings are in the Kivijalka of the Parish Hall at Kirkkokatu 28.
Discussion topics vary from religious matters to relationships. Student ministers

Foreign films
are shown in the original language with Finnish subtitles. Tickets cost approximately
FIM 35-50. Films usually run one to three weeks.
The rock and pop scene in Joensuu is very active. In fact, Joensuu was voted
the pop-city of 2001 by Finnish pop artists. A popular rock festival called
Ilosaarirock is arranged every year in the middle of July drawing thousands
of young people into the city. At other times there are several live performances
weekly. Please follow the advertisements and bulletin boards.
Joensuu Orchestra
Concerts at Carelia Hall, Yliopistokatu 2, usually on Thursdays (not every week)
at 7 p.m. Information and tickets available at Carelicum and at Carelia Hall
one hour before the concert.

A modern museum of history and culture. An exhibition entitled inKarelia - both
sides of the borderli takes a look at the region of Karelia in its historical
and cultural entity. Please ask at the Tourist Information Desk in Carelicum
for information on the smaller art galleries!
13.8 THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
Contains about 900 species of plants from 113 countries all over the world.
The collection of greenhouses (570 m²) imitate five climatic regions: tropical,
subtropical summer-rain, sub-tropical winter-rain, temperate and desert areas.
There is also a small greenhouse (180 m²) for propagation and research
purposes, two small plastic greenhouses for summer use only and in summer, visitors
may stroll through the outside garden. The Tropical Butterfly Garden is open
for visitors from April to September. Also available for visitors are Café
Botania and Boutique Botania.

13.9 PUBS, RESTAURANTS AND CAFÉS
There are several pubs and restaurants in Joensuu. Most of the places mentioned
below offer their services in English. The opening hours vary, but usually the
cafeterias open at 8 a.m. and close at 4 p.m., but a few restaurants stay open
till later in the evening. Most pubs open around 1 p.m. and close around 2 a.m.

13.10 SPORTS
Please note that the Student Union of the university has many sports activities
for university students. In addition, the international students of the university
can participate free of charge in a wide selection of sports classes provided
by the ihJoensuu Gymnastics and sportsli athletic club. Membership cards can
be obtained from the International Student Services. For more information, please
ask your International Studies Coordinator for a sports activities leaflet.
13.10.1 SWIMMING
The Polytechnic students are offered excellent sports facilities including a
swimming pool, a gym and a sauna at Tikkarinne, free of charge. The student
hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 16:00 - 19:00.

13.10.2 FISHING
Persons 18 years of age and over must pay a fishing management fee (kalastuksenhoitomaksu
in Finnish) and a local fishing license (kalastuslupa) which can be purchased
at post offices. Fishing licenses for the rapids of the River Pielisjoki are
available at the Joensuu Tourist Office, Carelicum and Hotel Kimmel, Itäranta
1. However, no fishing licenses are needed for ice fishing or fishing with a

13.10.6 WINTER SPORTS
There are excellent opportunities for skiing and skating in Joensuu. You can
find skating rinks around the town in wintertime. Skates can be purchased at
sports shops, department stores or flea markets. Alternatively, you can borrow
a pair of skates from a fellow Finnish student or the ihBasementl. storage of
the university Student Union.
Skiing is a very important part of Finnish culture. If you have never skied
before, in Finland you have a unique opportunity of trying both cross-country
and downhill skiing. There are many publicly maintained trails in Joensuu, for
example the one at Mehtimäki, very close to the university. Trails are
always open, naturally depending on the snow conditions, and some of the trails
are lit. There are also many downhill skiing centres in the surroundings of
Joensuu, such as Mustavaara and Koli. Koli is situated about 70 km north of
Joensuu. It is
a beautiful, popular downhill skiing centre. There are bus trips to Koli January-
March on Saturdays. All centres also rent the necessary equipment for downhill
skiing. Equipment for cross-country skiing is rented only at Koli. If you want
to try skiing in Joensuu, please ask if your fellow Finnish students would be
willing to lend you a set of their skis. There might also be second-hand skies
for sale at the flea markets.
Snowshoeing is a new and popular form of winter sports. There are snowshoe excursions
arranged every Saturday during the wintertime. Tel. 040 5562991 or (013) 318844

rent (FIM 40/day).
13.11 GAYS AND LESBIANS
The Joensuu chapter of SETA (The Finnish Gay and Lesbian Association) has activities
and parties monthly, and provides support services for its members. More information
